McGah’s Pub & Pianos
Author: Lee Smith
McGah’s Pub & Pianos is Danville’s legendary sports bar known for its delicious food, fantastic beer selection, sports memorabilia, and live entertainment. The McGah family is renowned in the Bay Area, holding historical legacies in both the NFL and the MLB. E.W. McGah was the co-founder of the NFL team, the Oakland Raiders, in 1960 and the family maintained ownership until 2005. E.W.’s son, E.J. McGah was a major league baseball player for the Boston Red Sox and a member of the 1946 pennant team. Both these teams are honored and represented throughout McGah’s Pub & Pianos, along with other Bay Area teams including the San Francisco 49ers, the Oakland A’s, the Golden State Warriors, and more.
McGah’s love of all things sports-related is evident in the sports memorabilia decorating the walls. Game Days find the place packed with sports fans of all teams as McGah’s provides nine flat screen HD televisions with which to air each and every game, thanks to their access to various cable sports packages.
The nightlife scene at McGah’s takes on an entirely different feel as the live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights draws in the crowd. The pub is well-known for its dueling pianists who actively involve the customers in their sing-along performance. Each pianist sits at a piano facing the other pianist. Song requests from the audience are made and the musicians take turns leading the crowd in singing along with their favorite songs, which are often enhanced by the outrageous and comedic performances by the pianists themselves.
Other less frequent events include a Youth Open Mic Night and the summertime Country & Cocktails. The Youth Open Mic Night is offered monthly and provides young performers between the ages of 9-18 the opportunity to present their talents in music and poetry. The Country & Cocktails live music series runs from June-August and allows customers to tear up the dance floor with music from country’s hottest stars.
